PARTS OF A PLANT
STEM ACTIVITY No. 1
Class Level 1 to 3

STEM Objective: To let the children understand that plants need food and there are different parts of every plant which perform different functions.

Tools: A Plant with pot (better with a flower), Scissors, Water, Spray Gun, Chart Paper, a Fruit, a microscope, a cutter blade.

Preparation: Gather the children, Bring the little plant with pot. ask any individual or 2 individuals to pull the plant out of the pot and put it on the table.
Now, you will see roots and shoots clearly on the plant, wash the roots to remove the dirt from the roots.
Cut the different parts of the plant and let the students see each different part clearly.
Now explain the following steps to every child and let the touch and hold the different parts of the plant in their hands.
Show them the video of this lesson plan 1st, for better understanding.

Explanation:


  • A plant has different parts that perform different functions.
  • The two main parts of a plant are ROOT and SHOOT.
  • Roots grow below the ground and shoots grow above it.
  • Shoots are further connected to to Branches, Leaves, Flowers & Fruits.
  • The stem carries water and minerals from the roots to the leaves and carries the food prepared by the leaves to the different parts of the plant.
  • Branches are the parts that grow from stem.
  • Leaves grow on the stem and on branches too.
  • They usually are of green color due to the presence of chlorophyll which helps in making food for the plants.
  • Leaves have small openings called stomata, through which plants take air in and breathe out.
  • Flowers are the reproductive parts of the plant. They come in different sizes, shapes and colors.
  • by the process of pollination, flowers develop into fruits which have seeds in them and some fruits are eaten by us and other animals.
  • Roots help the plant to carry water and minerals from ground to above.
  • Roots are under the ground and they help in the plants to stand upright.

Wrap Up: 


  • Tell the students to make diagrams of different parts of a plant on their notebooks.
  • Create groups of students according to the strength of the class.
  • Give Different diagrams of each part of plant to a single group.
  • This will improve the team work of the students.
